A survey has revealed that 74 per cent of UK businesses are planning to host a Christmas party this year.
A Christmas party may seem an unnecessary expense in the current climate and some party poopers may question ‘why bring it back if no-one has mentioned it?’. However, failing to invest in your team is failing to invest in your business and TAB has a clear message for the 10 per cent surveyed who remain undecided about a Christmas celebration:
“Never underestimate the value of in-person interactions to the wellbeing of your employees and business as a whole,” comments Ed Reid, co-owner of The Alternative Board. “The ways in which we work have changed enormously over the past three years and so many advantages have been discovered through working from home and increased flexibility. That said, humans are inherently relational and the annual office Christmas party provides the perfect opportunity to bring employees together. Time spent collectively is crucial for our wellbeing and companies must ensure they are investing as much in maintaining team morale as they are in boosting individual ambitions.”
Understanding the value that in-person interactions can deliver, here are our top 5 reasons why businesses should host a Christmas party.
#1 Show your appreciation
A Christmas party is the ultimate opportunity to say thanks and show gratitude to your staff. Staff members who feel valued and invested in are much less likely to spend their festive break trawling the internet for a new employer.
#2 Commit to your company culture
Organise a party that reflects the culture of your organisation and use it to set the tone for the year ahead. If your business encourages staff to spend time on their health and wellbeing, consider a Christmas party that involves a sporting or mindful activity, rather than just a boozy night out.
#3 Invest in cross-company interactions
Bringing together staff from all levels and areas of your business is not just great for morale but can also foster stronger inter-department relationships. A Christmas party is a great way to strengthen your team dynamic ready for the year ahead.
#4 Give everyone a break
Demonstrate that you recognise the importance of time well spent out of the office. A change of scene allows employees to escape from the everyday stresses of their working lives and enjoy one another’s company.
#5 Support your local community
Use your Christmas party to invest in local businesses and suppliers and build relationships with them for the long term. Christmas parties don’t have to break the bank - consider lunch time options or a cheaper party in January, and don’t forget HMRC will even give you tax relief for entertaining your staff!
